How to use the grout & thinset calculator

  1. Measure the actual project. Break irregular work into separate sections and record finished dimensions consistently.
  2. Enter the core measurements. The quick view focuses on project geometry; add or subtract sections where the calculator supports multiple areas.
  3. Review purchasing assumptions. Open Advanced inputs to replace example prices, waste, coverage, density, pack size, minimum order, or delivery assumptions with current project information.
  4. Calculate and verify. Review the formula, limitations, whole-unit rounding, product instructions, and supplier requirements before purchasing.

Key inputs covered: Tile length, Tile width, Grout joint width, Grout joint depth, Grout bag volume yield, Thinset coverage, Setting-material allowance, Grout bag price, Thinset bag price, Tile example price, and additional project-specific assumptions.

Result coverage: The grout & thinset calculator reports 6 separate quantities so the primary estimate and its supporting purchase or planning values can be checked together.

Tile waste-planning scenarios

Layout, piece dimensions, room geometry, matching, cuts, defects, and installer practice determine the allowance. Use these only as prompts for confirming the actual order.

Layout conditionAllowance to investigate
Straight grid in a simple area5–10%
Several cuts or interrupted areas10–15%
Diagonal, pattern, or many cuts15% or product-specific

Planning note: The percentages are editable planning screens, not universal recommendations. Follow the selected product and installer instructions; consult TCNA technical resources where applicable.

How the estimate works

Net tile area and tile dimensions approximate total joint length; joint width times depth estimates grout volume, while thinset uses editable bag coverage and both receive the allowance.

Smaller tile creates more joint length and normally requires more grout for the same tiled area.

Assumptions, rounding, and limitations

Dimensions are treated as finished measurements. Only deductions and allowances entered above are included. Decimal measurements display to two places; purchase quantities round up when a whole container or piece is required.

  • Grout yield and thinset coverage vary substantially with tile thickness, joint profile, trowel notch, substrate flatness, back-buttering, product density, and waste.
  • The tile count is an area screen, not a layout, cut, pattern, or carton calculation.
  • Use the selected manufacturers' coverage tables and confirm substrate preparation, movement joints, membrane, cure time, compatibility, and installation standards.

Frequently asked questions

Are the results exact?

No. Results are planning estimates based on the dimensions and assumptions entered. Confirm product coverage, site conditions, and ordering rules with the supplier.
