Paver Patio and Walkway Calculator
Estimate pavers, pallets, bedding sand, aggregate base, edge restraint, and editable material cost for patios and walkways.
How to use the pavers calculator
- Measure the actual project. Break irregular work into separate sections and record finished dimensions consistently.
- Enter the core measurements. The quick view focuses on project geometry; add or subtract sections where the calculator supports multiple areas.
- Review purchasing assumptions. Open Advanced inputs to replace example prices, waste, coverage, density, pack size, minimum order, or delivery assumptions with current project information.
- Calculate and verify. Review the formula, limitations, whole-unit rounding, product instructions, and supplier requirements before purchasing.
Key inputs covered: Paver length, Paver width, Joint width, Bedding-sand depth, Aggregate-base depth, Cut and breakage allowance, Pallet coverage, Pallet example price, Bedding-sand bag yield, Bedding-sand bag example price, and additional project-specific assumptions.
Result coverage: The pavers calculator reports 7 separate quantities so the primary estimate and its supporting purchase or planning values can be checked together.
Estimate pavers and patio base materials
Combine multiple patio or walkway shapes and estimate whole pavers, compacted base, bedding sand, joint material, edge restraint, waste, and cost.
Paver quantity and pattern waste
Net paved area divides by the installed face area of one paver. Curves, borders, diagonal patterns, and small pieces generally require a larger cut allowance.
Base and bedding layers
Base and bedding quantities use the entered compacted depths. Excavation, geotextile, drainage, soil conditions, and locally specified layer depths require project-specific review.
How the estimate works
Net paved area is increased for cuts and breakage, divided by the installed paver module, and multiplied by the entered bedding and base depths.
A 200 ft² patio with 10% allowance orders enough pavers for 220 ft² before pallet rounding.
Assumptions, rounding, and limitations
Dimensions are treated as finished measurements. Only deductions and allowances entered above are included. Decimal measurements display to two places; purchase quantities round up when a whole container or piece is required.
- Confirm paver dimensions, pallet coverage, joint width, and layer depths with the selected system.
- The aggregate-base design depends on soil, drainage, climate, and traffic.
- Edge restraint and compaction are required by many interlocking-paver systems.

Editorial process
BuildPlanCalc publishes the formula, editable assumptions, limitations, and supporting references so the estimate can be checked rather than treated as a black box. See the calculation and review methodology, or report a correction.
Frequently asked questions
Are the results exact?
No. Results are planning estimates based on the dimensions and assumptions entered. Confirm product coverage, site conditions, and ordering rules with the supplier.
Are paver base and sand calculated separately?
Yes. Enter a separate compacted depth for aggregate base and bedding sand so their volumes remain visible.
