Retaining Wall Block and Base Calculator
Estimate segmental wall blocks, caps, aggregate base, drainage stone, and editable material cost for a uniform wall section.
How to use the retaining wall calculator
- Measure the actual project. Break irregular work into separate sections and record finished dimensions consistently.
- Enter the core measurements. The quick view focuses on project geometry; add or subtract sections where the calculator supports multiple areas.
- Review purchasing assumptions. Open Advanced inputs to replace example prices, waste, coverage, density, pack size, minimum order, or delivery assumptions with current project information.
- Calculate and verify. Review the formula, limitations, whole-unit rounding, product instructions, and supplier requirements before purchasing.
Key inputs covered: Wall length, Exposed wall height, Block face length, Block face height, Buried courses, Cap face length, Cut and breakage allowance, Aggregate-base width, Aggregate-base depth, Drainage-stone width, and additional project-specific assumptions.
Result coverage: The retaining wall calculator reports 7 separate quantities so the primary estimate and its supporting purchase or planning values can be checked together.
Estimate segmental retaining-wall materials
Use wall length, exposed height, buried courses, block dimensions, base, drainage stone, caps, waste, and editable prices for a preliminary quantity estimate.
Blocks, courses, and caps
Wall height divides by block height and rounds up to whole courses. The result adds buried courses and converts each course length to whole blocks.
Engineering and site limits
This calculator does not design reinforcement, drainage, embedment, setbacks, or foundations. Tall, sloped, loaded, terraced, or poor-soil walls can require engineered design.
How the estimate works
Wall length is divided by block face length and wall height by block face height; buried courses, waste, base, and drainage volumes are then added.
Enter the installed face dimensions printed for the chosen block rather than its nominal package dimensions.
Assumptions, rounding, and limitations
Dimensions are treated as finished measurements. Only deductions and allowances entered above are included. Decimal measurements display to two places; purchase quantities round up when a whole container or piece is required.
- This is a quantity takeoff, not a stability or structural design.
- Wall batter, embedment, drainage, reinforcement, surcharge, soil, and local rules can change the system.
- CMHA recommends engineered design for walls above applicable limits; its general guidance identifies four feet as an important review threshold.

BuildPlanCalc publishes the formula, editable assumptions, limitations, and supporting references so the estimate can be checked rather than treated as a black box. See the calculation and review methodology, or report a correction.
Frequently asked questions
Are the results exact?
No. Results are planning estimates based on the dimensions and assumptions entered. Confirm product coverage, site conditions, and ordering rules with the supplier.
Does the retaining-wall estimate include buried blocks?
Yes. Enter the number of buried courses separately so they are added to the exposed wall courses.
