Home Renovation and Remodeling Cost Calculator
Combine editable renovation line items, contingency, design and permit allowances, tax, and uncertainty into a transparent planning range.
How to use the renovation cost calculator
- Measure the actual project. Break irregular work into separate sections and record finished dimensions consistently.
- Enter the core measurements. The quick view focuses on project geometry; add or subtract sections where the calculator supports multiple areas.
- Review purchasing assumptions. Open Advanced inputs to replace example prices, waste, coverage, density, pack size, minimum order, or delivery assumptions with current project information.
- Calculate and verify. Review the formula, limitations, whole-unit rounding, product instructions, and supplier requirements before purchasing.
Key inputs covered: Contingency allowance, Design and permit allowance, Tax on entered line items, Low-range adjustment, High-range adjustment, Project category, Pricing unit, Scope quantity, Your installed unit rate.
Result coverage: The renovation cost calculator reports 7 separate quantities so the primary estimate and its supporting purchase or planning values can be checked together.
How the estimate works
Each editable quantity is multiplied by its installed unit rate; contingency, design/permit, and tax allowances are added before the entered low and high uncertainty adjustments create a planning range.
A fixed kitchen allowance can be combined with square-foot painting or flooring rates while keeping each assumption editable and visible.
Assumptions, rounding, and limitations
Dimensions are treated as finished measurements. Only deductions and allowances entered above are included. Decimal measurements display to two places; purchase quantities round up when a whole container or piece is required.
- This calculator intentionally supplies no regional default pricing; obtain current written local contractor, supplier, permit, and professional-service information.
- Do not mix material-only and installed rates for the same scope, and avoid duplicate line items or allowances.
- Hidden conditions, hazardous materials, temporary work, financing, escalation, relocation, code upgrades, structural changes, and schedule impacts can materially change cost.
