How to use the drywall calculator

  1. Measure the actual project. Break irregular work into separate sections and record finished dimensions consistently.
  2. Enter the core measurements. The quick view focuses on project geometry; add or subtract sections where the calculator supports multiple areas.
  3. Review purchasing assumptions. Open Advanced inputs to replace example prices, waste, coverage, density, pack size, minimum order, or delivery assumptions with current project information.
  4. Calculate and verify. Review the formula, limitations, whole-unit rounding, product instructions, and supplier requirements before purchasing.

Key inputs covered: Include walls, Include ceilings, Drywall layers, Sheet length, Sheet width, Preferred orientation, Waste allowance, Sheet example price, Screws per sheet, Compound coverage, and additional project-specific assumptions.

Result coverage: The drywall calculator reports 6 separate quantities so the primary estimate and its supporting purchase or planning values can be checked together.

Estimate drywall sheets for walls and ceilings

Calculate net wall and ceiling area across multiple rooms, subtract openings, and estimate whole sheets plus tape, compound, screws, waste, and cost.

Room walls and ceilings

Wall area comes from room perimeter and height, with doors and windows deducted. Ceiling area can be included or excluded for each project.

Sheet layout and finishing materials

Area-based sheet counts do not replace a hanging layout. Sheet orientation, seams, offcuts, fire or moisture ratings, finish level, corners, and framing can change quantities.

How the estimate works

Selected wall and ceiling area × layers × waste is divided by sheet area; finishing materials scale from sheets or covered area.

Turn ceilings off for a walls-only estimate and use two layers when the assembly requires them.

Assumptions, rounding, and limitations

Dimensions are treated as finished measurements. Only deductions and allowances entered above are included. Decimal measurements display to two places; purchase quantities round up when a whole container or piece is required.

  • Orientation is reported but this general estimator does not optimize every seam and cut.
  • Use the drywall type and assembly required for moisture, fire, sound, or impact performance.
  • Fastener schedules and finish levels vary by assembly and specification.

Frequently asked questions

Are the results exact?

No. Results are planning estimates based on the dimensions and assumptions entered. Confirm product coverage, site conditions, and ordering rules with the supplier.

Can drywall offcuts be reused between rooms?

Often, but only a layout can confirm it. The waste allowance provides a planning buffer without assuming every offcut is reusable.
