Stair Stringer, Riser and Tread Calculator

Plan stair risers, treads, run, angle, stringer length, stringer count, and tread material from measured rise and available run.

Core project inputs are shown. Current defaults are used for purchasing, product, and cost assumptions.

Total rise
Available stair run
Planning maximum riser
Stair width
Maximum stringer spacing

Planning estimate only. Verify dimensions, product specifications, site conditions, prices, ordering rules, and local codes with qualified professionals and suppliers.

How to use the stairs calculator

  1. Measure the actual project. Break irregular work into separate sections and record finished dimensions consistently.
  2. Enter the core measurements. The quick view focuses on project geometry; add or subtract sections where the calculator supports multiple areas.
  3. Review purchasing assumptions. Open Advanced inputs to replace example prices, waste, coverage, density, pack size, minimum order, or delivery assumptions with current project information.
  4. Calculate and verify. Review the formula, limitations, whole-unit rounding, product instructions, and supplier requirements before purchasing.

Key inputs covered: Riser-count mode, Total rise, Available stair run, Planning maximum riser, Number of risers, Planning minimum tread depth, Stair width, Maximum stringer spacing, Tread waste allowance, Stringer-stock example price, and additional project-specific assumptions.

Result coverage: The stairs calculator reports 9 separate quantities so the primary estimate and its supporting purchase or planning values can be checked together.

How the estimate works

Solved mode rounds total rise up by the entered maximum riser; fixed mode uses the entered count. Individual rise/run, Pythagorean stringer length, angle, spacing, and tread footage follow.

The 2021 IRC reference limits typical residential stair risers to 7¾ inches, but the editable planning field and local adopted rules control.

Assumptions, rounding, and limitations

Dimensions are treated as finished measurements. Only deductions and allowances entered above are included. Decimal measurements display to two places; purchase quantities round up when a whole container or piece is required.

  • This planning geometry does not certify building-code, accessibility, structural, headroom, landing, handrail, guard, nosing, or egress compliance.
  • The cited model-code value is only a reference; adopted editions and local amendments vary.
  • Have final stairs and stringers designed and inspected for the actual materials, loads, connections, and jurisdiction.

Frequently asked questions

Are the results exact?

No. Results are planning estimates based on the dimensions and assumptions entered. Confirm product coverage, site conditions, and ordering rules with the supplier.
