Roofing Shingle, Pitch and Accessory Calculator

Estimate multiple roof planes, pitch, shingles, underlayment, ridge caps, starter, drip edge, nails, tear-off, and disposal.

How to use the roofing calculator

  1. Measure the actual project. Break irregular work into separate sections and record finished dimensions consistently.
  2. Enter the core measurements. The quick view focuses on project geometry; add or subtract sections where the calculator supports multiple areas.
  3. Review purchasing assumptions. Open Advanced inputs to replace example prices, waste, coverage, density, pack size, minimum order, or delivery assumptions with current project information.
  4. Calculate and verify. Review the formula, limitations, whole-unit rounding, product instructions, and supplier requirements before purchasing.

Key inputs covered: Waste allowance, Skylight/chimney deductions, Bundle coverage, Bundle example price, Underlayment roll coverage, Underlayment roll price, Ridge and hip length, Valley length, Eave and rake length, Ridge-cap coverage, and additional project-specific assumptions.

Result coverage: The roofing calculator reports 10 separate quantities so the primary estimate and its supporting purchase or planning values can be checked together.

Estimate roof area, squares, and shingle bundles

Add each roof plane using run, length, and pitch or direct slope dimensions. The calculator converts the total area into roofing squares, bundles, underlayment, and nails.

Roof pitch and sloped area

Pitch mode converts horizontal run to slope length before calculating surface area. Direct-slope mode is useful when reliable eave-to-ridge measurements are already available.

Bundles, waste, and roof complexity

Bundle coverage and waste are editable. Valleys, hips, dormers, starter, ridge caps, penetrations, and manufacturer requirements can increase the actual order.

Roof pitch reference

The slope multiplier converts horizontal plan area to sloped roof area before waste and purchasing quantities are applied.

3/1214.0°1.031
4/1218.4°1.054
5/1222.6°1.083
6/1226.6°1.118
8/1233.7°1.202
10/1239.8°1.302
12/1245.0°1.414

Planning note: The values are derived from right-triangle geometry: √(12² + rise²) ÷ 12. Measure each roof plane and verify the assembly with the plans and manufacturer. See GAF roof-measurement guidance.

How the estimate works

Each horizontal plane area is multiplied by √(1 + slope²), then deductions and waste are applied before accessory coverage is rounded up.

Pitch can be entered as rise per 12, degrees, or percent slope and is converted to one slope factor.

Assumptions, rounding, and limitations

Dimensions are treated as finished measurements. Only deductions and allowances entered above are included. Decimal measurements display to two places; purchase quantities round up when a whole container or piece is required.

  • Enter each actual roof plane; the gable, hip, and shed labels do not infer geometry automatically.
  • Starter, ridge, valley, flashing, and ventilation requirements depend on the roof and product system.
  • Roof measurement and work are hazardous—use plans, aerial measurements, or qualified professionals instead of climbing a roof.

Frequently asked questions

Are the results exact?

No. Results are planning estimates based on the dimensions and assumptions entered. Confirm product coverage, site conditions, and ordering rules with the supplier.

How many square feet are in a roofing square?

One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface.
